Memorable Manitobans: Peter Bilash (1924-2006)

Community activist.

Born near Ethelbert on 10 July 1924, son of Alexander and Anatasia Bilash, he lived with his family on a farm before they moved to town. During the Second World War, he served in the Canadian military until December 1946. He then worked in construction in Ontario before taking up a tool dealership in Dauphin.

On 23 May 1959, he married Elizabeth Wierbicki and they had two daughters. Active in the community, he served on the board of Canada's National Ukrainian Festival and was instrumental in establishing the Ukrainian Memorial Park on the Selo site south of Dauphin. In recognition of his service, he received a President's Award from the Manitoba Heritage Federation (2001) and a Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal (2002).

He died at Dauphin on 10 December 2006 and was buried in the Dauphin Riverside Cemetery.
