Memorable Manitobans: Kenneth Morgan “Ken” Adam (1940-2023)

Civil engineer.

Born at Elkhorn on 20 May 1940, the youngest of four children of Florence and Wilbur Adam, he grew up on the family farm at Fleming, Saskatchewan. He attended high school at Moosomin then obtained BSc and MSc degrees in Civil Engineering at the University of Manitoba. He then received a PhD degree from Colorado State University (Fort Collins).

He began a career in engineering as a professor at the University of Manitoba before leaving to consult with several companies, including ID Engineering/Templeton Engineering, specializing in environmental and cold regions engineering. He travelled widely and worked on all seven continents including the Antarctic, where he designed and oversaw the construction of an airstrip and port facility at the Rothera Research Station.

In 1961, he married Marilyn Stevenson at Winnipeg and they subsequently had three daughters. His hobbies included cooking and playing cards. He played hockey with the Fort Richmond Oldtimers and enjoyed time at the family cottage at Moose Lake.

He died at the Riverview Health Centre on 11 July 2023.
