Memorable Manitobans: John Dawson Evelyn (1862-1942)

Educator.

Born at Wooton, Surrey, England on 29 March 1862, he came to Canada in 1903 and served as the Principal of Westbourne School (1908-1926), Dominion City School (1928-1930), Stockton School (1930-1931), and Sinclair School (1931-1932). He retired from teaching in 1932.

He and wife Jane Evelyn (1869-1942) had three children: Mary Adelaide Sylva Evelyn (c1895-1984, wife of Wilfred John Butler), William Frederick Evelyn (1897-1964), and Oretta Evelyn (1899-1989, wife of Oscar Patteson). The family lived at 192 Roseberry Street, St. James. He was a member of the Grand Lodge of Scotland, Masons, and St. James Anglican Church.

He died at the Misericordia Hospital on 1 August 1942 and was buried in the St. James Cemetery.
