Historic Sites of Manitoba: Winnipeg Receiving Station Monument (Osborne Street, Winnipeg)

A plaque on the west grounds of the Legislative Building, along Osborne Street in Winnipeg, commemorates the Ukrainian Canadians and other eastern Europeans who were unjustly imprisoned between 1 September 1914 and 29 July 1916 in the Winnipeg Receiving Station at the original Fort Osborne Barracks. The imprisonments occurred during Canada's first national internment operations of 1914-1920 that resulted in the imprisonment of over 8,500 immigrants from enemy nations, termed “enemy aliens”, during the First World War.

In 2015, on the 100th anniversary of the internment operation, a statue next to the plaque was erected by the Interment Committee of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress-Manitoba Provincial Council with the support of the Canadian First World War Internment Recognition Fund.
