Historic Sites of Manitoba: Petursson House / Lawson Apartments and Annex / Toth Apartments (760-764 Wellington Avenue, Winnipeg)

This building at the corner of Simcoe Street and Wellington Avenue in Winnipeg is believed to have been built prior to 1906 by contractor Bjorn Pétursson. He lived in the two-storey portion while operating an annex on the rear as a grocery and hardware store. By 1920, the residential portion had been converted to an unnamed three-apartment block and, by 1925, the annex was occupied by the Ivanhoe Meat Market. The block was named Lawson Apartments by 1945 then renamed Toth Apartments by 1956. By the mid-1960s, the annex was being used as a single residence.
