Historic Sites of Manitoba: Tall Grass Prairie Monument (Oak Hammock Marsh, RM of Rockwood)

Recognizing that less than one-percent remains of Manitoba's tall grass prairie, this monument in the Oak Hammock Marsh Wildlife Management Area in the Rural Municipality of Rockwood was dedicated on 13 August 1989 by Premier Gary Filmon, Rod Tester (President, Manitoba Naturalists Society), and Monte Hummel (President, World Wildlife Fund Canada). This 80-acre tract of undisturbed native prairie was owned from the 1930s to 1988 by the Brennan family of Stonewall. It was purchased by the Manitoba Naturalists Society (now Nature Manitoba), the World Wildlife Fund, and Manitoba Natural Resources.
