Historic Sites of Manitoba: St. Peter’s Anglican Church (365 Selkirk Avenue, Winnipeg)

Formerly at the northwest corner of Selkirk Avenue and Aikins Street in Winnipeg, a one-storey wood frame building was built in 1894 for the Anglican congregation of St. Peter’s (originally a mission of St. John’s Anglican Cathedral) at a cost of about $1,700. With a seating capacity of about 200 people, it opened officially on 5 July 1894, at a ceremony attended by Archdeacon Octave Fortin and Archbishop Robert Machray.

In 1899, extensive additions and alterations to the building included enlarging the building, addition of a basement, and addition of a new brick and stone facade designed by local architect Charles Burgess. The work was completed by contractors John T. Hunter and Robert Underwood, with masonry completed by contractor George Baird, at a cost of about $3,000. In 1907, a mission church known as St. Barnabas Anglican Church was established.

Closed in July 1932, the pipe organ was donated to St. Thomas Anglican Church in Weston. It appears the former church was converted into a multi-family residence before being demolished in the late 1930s. By 1941, the property had been subdivided and new houses, including the Weselake House, were built here. No vestige of the church remains.
