Historic Sites of Manitoba: St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church (RM of Fisher)

On the grounds of this church in the Rural Municipality of Fisher is a monument commemorating the Ukrainian immigrants who arrived in this area in 1903-1906, establishing Poplarfield at NE12-22-2W. It comprised a post office and a Canadian National Railway station. The church building was brought to this site in 1961 and, after the closure of the railway, residents gradually moved to its vicinity. The monument lists the names of early pioneers of the Hamrlik, High Plains, New Star, and Poplarfield districts. In 1997, it became a municipally-designated historic site.
