Historic Sites of Manitoba: St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery (RM of St. Clements)

In 1896, when the first German Lutherans arrived in the Greenwald area of the Rural Municipality of St. Clements, church services were held in various homes. In 1903, the Greenwald School was built with services officiated by Pastor Burgdorf and then Pastor F. J. Fuerst. The official congregation of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church was organized in 1907. In 1937, the 37 members of the congregation decided to purchase some land from August Bauschke Jr. for $1 and build a permanent structure, measuring 27 by 50 feet, on the edge of the forest. The church was dedicated on 18 September 1938. A former school bell weighing 600 pounds was purchased for $18 from the Rosenfeld Lutherans. In 1951 the adjacent land was bought for $17 to use as the cemetery. The first burial occurred in 1956.

At a site visit in November 2019, the church building was gone but it is commemorated with signage put up by the St. Clements Heritage Advisory Committee.
