Historic Sites of Manitoba: Harazd School No. 1631 / Solway School No. 1631 School (RM of Stuartburn)

The Harazd School District was established formally in June 1912, though it remained inactive for the first few years. Classes began at temporary quarters in March 1916 and, following a decision of nine in favour to none opposed (out of a possible 59 ratepayers), a one-classroom schoolhouse was built. To help finance the decision, $1,600 in debentures were issued in September 1916. The schoolhouse was built by George Mihaychuk and George Eliuk on land acquired at NE14-1-9E in Rural Municipality of Stuartburn. A 12 by 20 feet teacherage was also built and furnished in 1917, financed with the aid of a $350 debenture in May of that year. The district was renamed from Harazd to Solway just after the First World War, some time between December 1918 and June 1919.

The school operated at this location until 1 May 1921 when it, and presumably the teacherage, was relocated to NE11-1-8E. In April 1961, the district became part of the Boundary School Division and the school closed in 1964.

The teachers of Harazd School / Solway School were Michael [W?] J. Mihaychuk (Spring 1916 - Spring 1917), Michael John Kozier (October 1917 - July 1919), Charles Foulsham Laine (Fall 1919 - Spring 1920, & Spring 1921), Amelia Magdaline Laine (Fall 1920 - Spring 1921) George Ernest?
