Historic Sites of Manitoba: McAuley Pioneers Monument (McAuley, RM of Ellice-Archie)This monument in McAuley, in the Rural Municipality of Ellice-Archie, commemorates pioneers of the McAuley district. The first settlers arrived in the area in 1882, travelling via the Fort Ellice Trail to Moosomin, North West Territories [now Saskatchewan] or Birtle, Manitoba for provisions. In 1902, the Canadian Pacific Railway was laid and the townsite was established; two years later, a Presbyterian Church was built and, two years after that, Rutherglen School opened. The cairn, dedicated on 17 July 1970, also honours local veterans who were killed during the First World War and Second World War. Near the cairn is the former bell and cornerstone from the Rutherglen Consolidated School building, erected in 1915.
