Historic Sites of Manitoba: Fort Desjarlais (Souris River, Municipality of Grassland)

A fur trade post at this site alongside the Souris River in what is now the Municipality of Grassland was established in 1836 by Joseph Desjarlais (1806-1876). A long log building and several smaller buildings were surrounded by a wooden palisade. At its height, the post was occupied by over seventy men. It operated for twenty years and is believed to have been destroyed by a prairie fire that swept through the region in 1856.
