Historic Sites of Manitoba: Grand Trunk Pacific Railway Stable / Great Northern Railway Stable / Forks Market Building (1 Forks Market Road, Winnipeg)
The original purpose of these buildings at The Forks in Winnipeg was to accommodate horses used for the cartage and express business of two railways. The larger building was constructed for the Great Northern Railway (later Canadian Northern Railway) in 1909 while the smaller building was constructed for the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway in 1910. Both were designed by Warren & Wetmore, the same firm that designed the Grand Central Terminal in New York City. In the late 1980s, they were joined by an atrium and a series of bridges to create what is now known as the Forks Market.
