Historic Sites of Manitoba: Appleton House (39 Mortimer Place, Winnipeg)

This 1½-storey wood frame and stone foundation house on Mortimer Place in Winnipeg, measuring 26 feet by 40 feet, and 8 feet by 12 feet, was designed by local architect Edward George Sherwood and built in 1908 by day labour for owner Robert Straughen at a cost of about $3,000. Straughen sold it to journalist John Appleton.

At the time of a 2025 site visit, the house was relatively unmodified from its original appearance but was started to show wear on its exterior shingle siding and trim.
