Born at Edinburgh, Scotland on 1 July 1841, he came to Canada in 1854 and settled at Mt. Forest, Upper Canada (now Ontario). He moved to Manitoba in 1889 and went to Manitou, working as a photographer there for two years. In 1891, he moved to Carman where he had a photography studio for many years, along with one at Roland. On 23 June 1892, he married Ellen Baird (?-?) of Wadesboro, Kentucky at Winnipeg. He died at Carman on 21 February 1908.
