Although there are a few abandonned houses, the village is well-kept.

Birnie like the other districts had their share of busi- nesses. Some of them were: two elevators, blacksmith shops, butcher shop, machinery dealers, hairdressing salon, boarding house, pool room, Post Office, garages, feed mill and a fox farm.
