Memorable Manitobans: James John “Jim” Zayshley (1916-2007)

Community activist.

Born on the family farm near Tadmore, Saskatchewan on 28 July 1916, son of Eva and Ambrose Zayshley, he was working as a barber at Flin Flon when, in 1941, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force. A short time later, he was diagnosed with tuberculosis and was treated at the Ninette Sanatorium. He then worked as an x-ray technician for the City of Winnipeg Health Department, during which he met and married (1946) his wife, Marguerite Dorothy “Dolly” Baker (1922-1999) and they had a daughter.

He worked as a Surveys Officer for the Sanatorium Board of Manitoba for 28 years, during which he travelled throughout Manitoba to organize x-ray clinics and promote tuberculosis prevention. He appeared in the Board's film Road to Recovery (c1950) and his work was mentioned in the book Memoir of a Living Disease: Dr. Earl Hershfield and Tuberculosis in Manitoba and Beyond (2005) about tuberculosis control in Manitoba.

He died at the Concordia Hospital on 21 June 2007.
