Memorable Manitobans: Bramwell Bernard Tovey (1953-2022)

Musical conductor, composer.

Born at London, England on 11 July 1953, he was Artistic Director for the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra (1989-2001), Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (2000-2018), Calgary Opera (2019-2021), and Sarasota (Florida) Orchestra (2021-2022). He had guest appearances with orchestras around the world. In recognition of his community service, he received a Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal (2002) and Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal (2012), and honorary doctorates from the University of Winnipeg (1993) and University of Manitoba (1999). He was inducted into the Order of Manitoba (2000) and Order of Canada (2013). He died at Barrington, Rhode Island on 12 July 2022.
