Memorable Manitobans: Robert Merrill Swayze (1942-2023)

Educator, administrator.

Born at Carnduff, Saskatchewan on 12 August 1942, the fifth of six children of Earl Wilfred Swayze and Linda Gladys Adams, he opened a radio and television business at the age of 15. After graduating from high school, he received a BA degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 1963 and moved to Brandon where he was hired to teach at the Brandon Collegiate (1963-1966).

He was an instructor in Communications at Assiniboine Community College (1966-1968) then he attended the University of Alberta for a year to receive a Masters degree in Educational Administration, after which he became the Assistant Superintendent of the Brandon School Division (1969-1993). He was then promoted to Superintendent and served until retirement in 2001.

In October 1967, he married Gilda Falvo and they had a son and two daughters.

He died at Brandon on 24 August 2023.
