Memorable Manitobans: Lawrence Peter Suchar (1933-2015)

Educator.

Born at the family homestead in Poplarfield on 1 February 1933, son of Peter Suchar (c1898-1981, later remarried to Felicia) and Anna Marko (c1910-1969), he earned a BA degree (1967) from the University of Manitoba. During his 37-year career in education, he taught at several Manitoba schools including Leeland School (1950-1951), Edward E. Best School (1954-1955), and Luxton School (1957-1958), prior to becoming Principal of Springfield School (1961-1966). He met Stephanie Jean Kostiw (c1935-2007) in 1962 and the couple, who married in 1965, moved to Pinawa soon after and had three children. He continued his career locally, as Principal of F. W. Gilbert School until they moved to Snow Lake in 1981, where he was Principal of Joseph H. Kerr School. He retired in 1988 and they returned to Pinawa in 1994. He died at Red River Place in Selkirk on 2 December 2015.
