Memorable Manitobans: David Slater (1895-1978)

Land developer.

Born in Russia on 31 October 1895, he came to Canada at an early age. During the First World War, he served with the 78th Battalion, WInnipeg Grenadiers. Returning to Winnipeg, he spent over 50 years in the real estate and insurance business with his firm, David Slater Limited. In the late 1950s, it was responsible for the development of the Polo Park shopping mall.

He married Leda Omansky (c1902-1988) and they had two sons, Joel Slater and Ronald Slater. Active in community affairs, he was Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Children’s Hospital, President of the Board of the Young Men’s Hebrew Association, President of the Board of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, President of the Jewish Welfare Fund of Winnipeg, Chairman of the Jewish Community Council, Officer of the Canadian Jewish Congress, and President of the Glendale Country Club (1954). He was a member of the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue.

He died at Kfar Netter, Israel on 27 February 1978 and was buried there.
