Memorable Manitobans: Everett George Porter (1889-1961)

Lawyer.

Born at Trenton, Ontario in 1889, he graduated with a degree in Political Science from the University of Toronto. He was Principal of the Gimli School for one year (1909-1910). Starting in 1911, he articled in law with the Winnipeg firm of Anderson and Garland and was called to the Manitoba Bar in 1914. Two years later, he joined the Portage la Prairie law firm of McPherson and Porter, continuing for the next 45 years, being at the time of his death the senior partner in the firm of Porter and Gilroy. He was made a King's Counsel in 1930. He was solicitor for the City of Portage la Prairie for a number of years.

On 6 November 1918, he married Lila Mildred Dalzell (1895-1938) at Portage la Prairie. They had no children. He was secretary of the Manitoba Liberal Progressive Association for over 25 years, and a member of the St. Mary's la Prairie Anglican Church, AF & AM (Assiniboine Lodge), Portage Elks Lodge, Portage Rotary Club, and Portage Country Club (President, 1938-1941).

He died at Portage la Prairie on 13 April 1961 and was buried in the Portage Hillside Cemetery.
