Memorable Manitobans: Winnifred Eugena Scriver Moore (1910-2003)

Journalist.

Born at Wolseley, Saskatchewan on 10 February 1910, daughter of Ed and Lillie Scriver, she was in Saskatchewan and took teacher training at the Regina Normal School. She then returned to Wolseley to teach school. During the Second World War, she served with the Navy Signal Corps where she met Ronald Stewart “Ron” Moore (1911-2003) in Ottawa and they were married in 1948.

They moved to Manitoba in the early 1950s and she taught at Swan River School (1951-1954) until moving to Brandon in 1954. She began a career in journalism in 1960, as editor of the women’s pages of the Brandon Sun. She wrote a seniors’ column prior to retirement in 1992, for which she received a 125th Anniversary of Canadian Confederation Medal.

She died at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on 23 June 2003 and was buried in the Brandon Cemetery.
