Automobile dealer.
Born at Georgetown, Ontario in 1874, he came to Manitoba with his parents in 1877 and lived at Portage la Prairie until 1878 when they moved to to Treherne district. He farmed from 1895 to 1911 when he opened a dealership for Ford vehicles in Treherne. At the time of his death, it was one of the oldest dealerships in western Canada.
On 7 January 1903, he married schoolteacher Annie Elizabeth Dunfield (1876-1964) at Portage la Prairie. They had two children: Hilliard Dunfield Metcalfe (1908-1977) and Marie Francis Metcalfe (1917-1969, wife of G. T. McNeill). In his youth, he was active in sports, playing hockey, curling, bicycle racing, golf, baseball, and lacrosse. In later years he managed hockey teams that won four Manitoba intermediate championships between 1934 and 1940.
He died at Treherne on 5 July 1964 and was buried in the Woodlands Cemetery.
