Liquor inspector, insurance agent, MLA (1986-1988), MLA (1988-1990), MLA (1990-1995), MLA (1995-1999), MLA (1999-2003), MLA (2003-2007), MLA (2007-2008), MLA (2011-2016), MLA (2016-2019), MLA (2019-2023), MLA (2023-2027).
Born at Sioux Lookout, Ontario on 10 November 1952, he received a BA degree in Political Science from the University of Manitoba (1975). He worked as a liquor inspector for the Manitoba Liquor Control Commission and ran an insurance and travel agency in partnership with Magnus Eliason.
In 1971, he joined the New Democratic Party and was an unsuccessful candidate for Winnipeg city council in the 1974 and 1983 municipal general elections. Moving to provincial politics, he was elected in the 1986, 1988, 1990, 1995, 1999, 2003, and 2007 general elections. He resigned in September 2008 and jumped to federal politics, being elected in the 2008 general election but was subsequently defeated in 2011. He returned to provincial politics and was re-elected in his former constituency in 2011, 2016, 2019, and 2023. He has held no ministerial portfolios during his long career in politics.
In recognition of his community service, he received a Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal (2002) and a Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal (2022).
