Memorable Manitobans: John Douglas Campbell MacLean (1929-1987)

Lawyer, MP (1958-1962).

Born at Winnipeg on 24 March 1929, son of Norman MacLean (c1886-1977) and Margaret Campbell (1892-1988), he attended Gladstone School, Earl Grey School, Kelvin High School, Brandon College, and the University of Manitoba. He was called to the Bars of Manitoba, Alberta, and the North West Territories and practiced law. He was a Progressive Conservative candidate in the 1957 federal general election but was defeated by Stanley Howard Knowles. He defeated Knowles in the 1958 general election but was defeated by Knowles in the 1962 general election. Active in sports, he was a member of the Allan Cup-winning Brandon Wheat Kings in 1949 and he played professional hockey in the United States. He died at Yellowknife, North West Territories on 9 November 1987. He was survived by his wife Geraldine, a daughter, and three sons.
