Memorable Manitobans: Edith Victoria Insley (1892-1949)

Educator.

Born at Portage la Prairie on 26 June 1892, daughter of Elizabeth Jane Usher (1867-1935) and Allen Lochlin Insley (1864-1942), she attended teacher training and later graduated from Wesley College (1925). She taught at Whitewater School (?-?) and Virden School (1917-1918), and was Principal of Fraserwood School (1919-1921, 1922-1923). Upon completing her degree, she joined the instructional staff of the Brandon School District No. 129 where she taught at Fleming School (1925-1926), Earl Oxford School (1928-1929), and Brandon Collegiate Institute (1926-1928, 1929-1944). She retired around 1945 and moved to Winnipeg where she lived at 109 Ethelbert Street. She was a member of the Brandon United Church, Manitoba Teachers’ Federation, and was President of the University Womens’ Club (1932-1933) at Brandon College. She died at her Winnipeg home on 3 July 1949 and was buried in the Virden Cemetery.
