Memorable Manitobans: George Gordon Harris (1883-1981)

Educator, cleric.

Born at Teeswater, Bruce County, Ontario on 21 August 1883, second son of Rev. Alexander G. Harris and Sarah Margaret Williams, younger brother of Percy Dewart Harris, he attended the London High School. He came to western Canada in 1902 and attended the Regina Normal School. He taught at LeCain School, north of Grenfell, for a couple of years then attended Victoria College in Toronto (1906). He received a degree in Theology from Wesley College in 1909.

In September 1909, he married Agnes McLeod (1887-1964) at Grenfell, Saskatchewan and they subsequently had a daughter and three sons, the three eldest of whom were born in China. They moved to Chung King SzeChuan, West China to teach in a mission high school operated by American and Canadian Methodists. He completed his theological training by correspondence in 1914 and was ordained in China. Returning to Canada in 1916, they settled at Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan where he was a member of the teaching staff of the Central College Institute, serving as teacher, Vice-Principal, Principal, Inspector, and guidance counsellor (1920-1946). He then became a pastor at Rouleau, Saskatchewan.

He spent eight years in United Church pastorates in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and British Columbia, including at Naramata, Peachland, and Rapid City. On retirement from the ministry in 1954, he and his wife moved to Naramata, British Columbia. They returned to Manitoba in 1956 and settled at Rapid City, where he served as Mayor (1957-1959). He was a member of the Canadian Bible Society (Manitoba Branch) and the Masons.

He died on 26 March 1981 and was buried in the Rapid City Cemetery.
