Memorable Manitobans: Samuel Earl Greenway (1875-1944)

Journalist.

Born at Little Prairie, Wisconsin on 16 February 1875, son of Reverend John and Grace Greenway, he came to Manitoba in 1880 and worked successively as a farmer, teacher, telegraph operator, and newspaper reporter. In 1911, he was editor of the Manitoba Weekly Free Press, based at Winnipeg.

In 1905, he married Ada Maria Cooke (1876-1959) at Boissevain and they had six children: Bessie Maria Grace Greenway (1909-1978, wife of Nils Bartels), Cora Audrey Greenway (1911-1993, wife of Thomas Park), Robert Seldon Earle Greenway (1913-1943), Emil Greenway (1915-1915), Norma Greenway (1915-1915), and Alison Greenway (1916-1992, wife of Morlan Dowhan). The family lived at 140 Marion Street, Norwood (c1911). His recreations included all outdoor sports, gardening, and chess.

He died in September 1944 and was buried in the Crystal City Cemetery.
