Memorable Manitobans: Guy Auldjo Gamsby (1893-1974)

Journalist.

Born at Gananoque, Ontario on 5 November 1893, son of H. C. Gamsby, he graduated from Queen's University and went overseas with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. Wounded, he was returned to Canada.

For several years, he worked in banking in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Alberta before moving to Winnipeg where he joined the editorial staff of the Winnipeg Free Press, working for over 20 years as Market Editor and later Grain Exchange representative for the Winnipeg Tribune. He was also the Dow-Jones correspondent for over 25 years. In 1945, he formed Journal Publishing and published the Canadian Grain Journal until retirement in 1965.

He and wife Rachael Kay Gamsby (1896-1991) had a son, Guy Fred Allan Gamsby. He was President of the Winnipeg Press Club (1941), Secretary of the Feed Manufacturers Association, Secretary of the Barley and Oil Seeds Commission, and a member of the Masons (Lansdowne Lodge, Northern Lights) and St. Aidan's Anglican Church.

He died at the Deer Lodge Hospital on 31 August 1974 and was buried in the Garry Memorial Park.
