Memorable Manitobans: Thomas Flood Elmes (1848-1912)

Educator.

Born in Ireland in December 1848, he obtained a BA degree from the Royal University of Ireland and, as of 1897, was teaching in the County of Cork. He married Jane Elmes (1849-1924) and they had two children: Mary Elizabeth “May” Elmes (1882-1961) and Richard Henry Elmes (1884-1956). The family immigrated to Canada in 1904 and settled at Winnipeg, living at 585 Maryland Street (1906) and later at 608 Balmoral Street (1911), taking in boarders at both locations.

He continued in the teaching profession, offering private mathematics instruction as well as being a lecturer at Tuckwell’s School for Boys / Winnipeg Proprietary School prior to 1909. He was the Principal of Gretna School (1908-1909) and Alexander School (1909-1910).

He died at his Winnipeg residence, 608 Balmoral Street, on 14 February 1912 and was buried in the Elmwood Cemetery.
