Memorable Manitobans: Wayne G. Chernecki (1949-2013)

Hockey player.

Born at Winnipeg on 12 August 1949 to Emilia Chornoboy (1923-2011) and Peter Chernecki (1921-2014), he was an exceptional athlete already in his teens. By age 19, he held the Manitoba Junior Baseball league Triple Crown title while playing for Legion 141, was honoured with the Harry Hood Trophy in high school football, and was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in professional hockey. However, instead of joining the Red Wings, he completed his Bachelor of Commerce degree at the University of Manitoba while playing hockey for the Winnipeg Junior Jets of the Western Canadian Hockey League (WCHL).

After graduating in 1971, he played five seasons with the Springfield Kings and the Providence Reds of the American Hockey League (AHL,) amassing an impressive number of points during his short career. He was sidelined in 1975 after suffering a significant knee injury. In 2013, he was inducted into the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame.

After his hockey career, he entered the real estate business, retiring in 2011 as Senior Vice President of Western Canada with Redcliff Realty Management. Meanwhile, he continued to devote his time to coaching young men in minor and junior hockey with the Winnipeg Hawks and the St. James Canadians, as well as the sports teams his children played on as they grew up. He was recognized in his community as a positive role model and motivator, and a man of integrity and a sense of honour.

With his wife, Marilyn Forth, he had three children.

He died at Winnipeg on 11 February 2013 and was buried in the Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens.
