Businessman.

Born at Stronsay in the Orkney Islands on 28 April 1878, he came to Winnipeg in May 1909 with his family and established a blacksmith and carriage business on Nairn Avenue in the Elmwood area.

His business later became known as Chalmers Auto Truck and Body Works that designed and built delivery vehicle bodies for such local firms as Eatons, Modern Dairies, Silverwoods Dairies, Sheas Brewery, Pellisier Brewery, Drewry's Brewery, and others. The firm evolved into semi trailer and tractor repairs and painting.

He was married twice, first on 28 January 1904 to widow Mary Mainland (1861-1949) with whom he had a daughter, Barbara Mainland Chalmers (1905-1993, wife of Harry W. H. Shepherd). His second wife was Maryanne Chalmers (?-1963). He was President (1922) and Secretary (1946) of the Manitoba Association of Blacksmiths, Horseshoers, and Woodworkers and a member of the Winnipeg Executives Association and King Memorial United Church.

He died at the Concordia Hospital on 18 September 1961 and was buried in the Elmwood Cemetery.
