Accountant.
Born at Regina, Saskatchewan on 26 June 1934 to Charlotte “Lottie” Silzer (1912-1968) and William Barthel (1908-1984), he moved to Winnipeg with his parents as an infant and grew up in St. James. He married Geraldine “Geri” Moore in 1958, with whom he went on to have two children.
He first worked as an accountant with his father at W. C. Barthel and Company, and later became the owner of E. C. Barthel and Associates, a private practice firm, where he advised and supported clients for almost 60 years. He served as President of the German Canadian Business Professional Association of Manitoba and was a founding member and President of the Hansa Credit Union.
He was an artist working in wood, which included wooden timepieces, a model railroad enthusiast, and enjoyed spending time at the cottage at Sandy Hook on Lake Winnipeg. Those who knew him appreciated him for his wisdom and his entertaining and witty stories.
He died at Winnipeg on 8 October 2012 and was buried in the Green Acres Memorial Gardens.
