Memorable Manitobans: George Ross Bancroft (1879-1961)

Mining engineer.

Born at Newington, Ontario on 15 April 1879, son of John Bancroft (1854-1917) and Margaret Elizabeth Snetsinger (1854-1940), he moved to northern Manitoba and worked as a mining engineer. In 1914, he travelled in the Herb Lake area and his observations led to the discovery of significant gold deposits there. He moved to British Columbia in 1927 and continued working there until retirement in 1948. He died at Kelowna, British Columbia on 26 October 1961.
