Dalnavert Request for Proposals
Dalnavert Museum is a designated National Historic Site of Canada and is one of Winnipeg’s finest examples of Queen Anne Revival architecture. Built in 1895, it was restored by the current owners, the Manitoba Historical Society, and opened to the public in 1974. The property at 61 Carlton includes a Visitors’ Centre constructed in 2005 and a parking lot. Dalnavert sees around 2,800 visitors annually at an operating cost of approximately $200,000. Dalnavert is pushing the MHS into financial difficulty, despite the best efforts of Council over many years. As a result, the MHS has closed Dalnavert Museum while Council explores options for the facility. Our gift shop and Visitors’ Centre rental space remain open. The MHS is consulting with a wide range of people about Dalnavert’s future. Dalnavert is an important heritage building. Any decision made by Council will be respectful of this fact. The Council recognizes that many individuals feel Dalnavert is best preserved as a heritage house museum. The Council also recognizes that many individuals feel that the home may be best preserved by operating as something other than a museum. Consequently, the Council is looking for detailed proposals:
Proposals should be specific as to how the facility will be funded over the long term. The Manitoba Historical Society is not looking for temporary solutions. Those wishing detailed financial information on the operation of Dalnavert Museum, for use in preparing a proposal, are asked to contact us at info@mhs.mb.ca or to consult our Annual Reports. Please communicate proposals to the Council, in writing, by one of the following two methods:
Proposals will be accepted until midnight on 17 January 2014. |
