Historic Sites of Manitoba: Wolch Building (881 Main Street, Winnipeg)

This one-storey brick building at the northeast corner of Main Street and Euclid Avenue in Winnipeg, measuring 50 feet by 103 feet, was built in 1938 by the construction firm of A. Akman and Son at a cost of about $10,000. It was used as a department store by owner Thomas “Tom” Wolch (1888-1974) of Watson, Saskatchewan.

In October 2021, the building was significantly damaged by an arson fire and, at the time of a 2025 site visit, it was vacant and boarded up. It is expected to be demolished this year.
