Historic Sites of Manitoba: Wikeem Block (1460 Main Street, Winnipeg)

This one-storey red-brown brick and Tyndall stone trimmed, Restrained Art Deco-style building was at the southwest corner of Main Street and Inkster Boulevard inb Winnipeg. Measuring 26 feet by 50 feet, it was built in 1928 by contractor Joseph Arthur Oliver Brunet at a cost of about $7,000, for owner Michael Wikeem (1890-1960).

In its original configuation, the building contained a single retail space, which was occupied by Wikeem's confectionery business known as Terra Nova Confectionery. It was later occupied by Happy’s Inn confectionary operated by retired railway chef Frank “Happy” Earle (1894-1961).

The building has since been demolished and the site is now occupied by a surface parking lot for an adjacent commercial building.
