Historic Sites of Manitoba: Tomasson Boarding House (Hecla Island, Hecla-Grindstone Provincial Park)

Built on Hecla Island in 1885 by Icelandic immigrants Helgi S. Tomasson (1847-1902) and his wife Margret Thorarinsdottir (1841-1928), this two-storey wood frame building was used to accommodate other immigrants as they came to the island to settle until they established a homestead. In later years, it served as a boarding house and family residence until the early 1960s.
