When Mennonites settled the East Reserve, in what is now the Rural Municipality of Hanover, farms were set up in small villages with communally-owned fields and pasturelands arranged in long narrow farmsteads. The result was a large number of towns with graveyards. This cemetery was for one of these towns, Schoensee, situated northeast of Grunthal. In 1926-1927, it was one of the last East Reserve villages to abandon the old village plan.
