Historic Sites of Manitoba: Piney Hotel (Piney, RM of Piney)

In 1918, Sam and Mary Lawson opened a small restaurant in Piney which was enlarged and became the Piney Hotel in 1927. It had a kitchen, living quarters, dining room, beer parlour, and ten guest rooms. After Sam died in the early 1930s, Mary sold the hotel to Jerry and Anne (Stephanson) Ayotte who operated it from 1935 to 1942. Subsequent owners included Mr. Mahoney, Mr. Holstein, and Barney and Bertha Bjornson who were assisted by son Bill and his wife Norma up to 1952. The new owners, Mr. and Mrs. Wally Milan, remodeled the hotel, replaced the foundation and enlarged the beer parlour. They sold it later in 1952. Owners and managers after that were Murray Uryhnik, Jerry Deleau, Frank Burwash, George and Del Menard, Buck Scott, Frank Boychuk, Wayne Cole, Steve Semeniuk and Fern Marquis. In 1963, the Menards remodeled the beverage room and opened it up to mixed company. At that time the hotel was also the Grey Goose bus depot.
