Historic Sites of Manitoba: Middlechurch Ferry Plaque (Middlechurch, RM of West St. Paul)

A plaque and bench at this site overlooking the Red River, at Middlechurch in the Rural Municipality of West St. Paul, commemorates a ferry that began operating here in 1880. It collected passengers and freight on the west side of the river, at what is today Balderstone Road, and delivered them to the east side at Pritchard Farm Road. A rider and horse paid 15 cents for the trip while a single person paid 5 cents. Those going to school, church or a funeral paid nothing. The ferry ceased operation in 1934.
