Historic Sites of Manitoba: Manishin Grocery (677 McGregor Street, Winnipeg)

This two-storey wood frame and stucco, Vernacular Commercial-style building was located at the southeast corner of McGregor Street and McAdam Avenue in Winnipeg. Measuring 24 feet by 30 feet, it was built in 1930 by day labour at a cost of about $5,000, for owner Charles Harry Manishin (1896-1980). Initially planned as a one-storey structure, during construction it was decided to add a second storey. It was used as a neighborhood grocery store with a residence on the second floor.

In February 1931, the grocery became associated with Western Pure Foods Limited to sell its Eclipse brand of products. In 1947, Manishin retired and the building was eventually converted entirely to residential use. On 25 May 1975, it was damaged by a fire and repaired at a cost of about $4,000. It was demolished in October 2017 and the site is now occupied by a new residence.
