Historic Sites of Manitoba: Irgon Lithium Mine (Nopiming Provincial Park)

A mining claim at this site near Cat Lake in Nopiming Provincial Park was staked in 1926 by Peter Osis. Thirty years later, the Lithium Corporation of Canada began to develop a lithium mine here. The deposit was estimated to contain 1,203,500 tons of lithium oxide core. Work was suspended in 1957 to await a more favourable market for lithium oxide and no products were ever produced. A 241-foot-deep shaft is sealed by a concrete slab.
