Historic Sites of Manitoba: Holy Resurrection Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church and Cemetery (Sunville, RM of Alonsa)

This Ukrainian Greek Orthodox church at Sunville, a municipally-designated historic site in the Rural Municipality of Alonsa, was built in 1904 by Ukrainian settlers who arrived in the area in 1896. A mixture of Roman Catholic and Orthodox icons in the church appear to be original to the pioneer period. The church was originally Greek Catholic but a rift in the parish resulted in several members leaving to build a Ukrainian Catholic church across the road. Holy Resurrection then became Orthodox. However, it was never officially affiliated with any church and various Orthodox priests would make only occasional services. Finally, in the early 1980s, it became affiliated officially with the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada. A stone monument in the nearby cemetery lists names for people in unmarked graves.
