Historic Sites of Manitoba: Hnausa East Cemetery / Breidavik Cemetery (Municipality of Bifrost-Riverton)

At the northeast corner of PR 222 and 130N in the Municipality of Bifrost-Riverton, the original Breiðavík (Hnausa East) Cemetery was established in 1876 to serve the Lutheran congregation between Sandy Bar and Árnes, and was adjacent to the Breiðavík Church built across the road around 1906. While several local victims of the 1876-1877 smallpox are buried here, the earliest marked grave is that of Guðrún Jónsdóttir (?-1877), wife of pioneer Pétur Pálsson. The oldest original headstone from 1878 marks the grave of Sigríður Guðmundsdóttir (wife of Gunnar Einarsson). Due to a split in the congregation of the Lutheran Church, the Hnausa West Cemetery, at the southwest corner of the intersection, was created in 1891.
