A monument on Hecla Island in the Hecla-Grindstone Provincial Park was dedicated on 26 July 1975 in commemoration of the Icelandic immigrants who settled here in the 1870s. A map on the monument shows the locations of 48 farms and provides the names of those farms and the settler who established each one. The park was the result of a joint federal-provincial project supported by the Fund for Rural Economic Development and the Department of Tourism, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs.
