Historic Sites of Manitoba: Hascken House (452 Salter Street, Winnipeg)

This two-storey wood frame house on Salter Street in Winnipeg, measuring 20 feet by 28 feet, was designed by local architect Max Zev Blankstein and built in 1912 by contractors Abraham Cohen and Abraham Meyerowitz for owner Jacob Cooperstock at a cost of about $2,500. Cooperstock sold it to clerk Alice Hascken and her family.

In the mid-1930s, the house was occupied by educator Solomon Abraham then, in 1939, alterations to it were completed by contractor Nathan Popeski at a cost of about $450. The house continued to be occupied by the Abraham family until his death in 1942.

At the time of a 2022 site visit, the house’s exterior was relatively unmodified from its original appearance.
