Historic Sites of Manitoba: Glesby Stable / Aberdeen Garage (468 Aberdeen Avenue, Winnipeg)

Formerly located on Aberdeen Avenue in Winnipeg, a 1½-storey cream brick and Tyndall Stone trimmed building, measuring 32 feet by 91 feet, was designed by local architect Max Zev Blankstein and built in 1910 by day labour a cost of about $6,000, for owner Harry Glesby (1873-?). He was a coal and wood wholesaler who used it as a stable for up to 30 horses.

In the late 1910s, the building started to be used as an automotive repair garage which occupied the building until the late 1940s. In 1920, repairs to the building were completed at a cost of about $3,000. It was later occupied by a variety of businesses including a machine shop and a soft drinks distributor.

By the early 2000s, the extensively modified building sat vacant. A majority of its windows were bricked over and its front facade had been painted white. It was demolished in 2003 and the site sat vacant until 2016 when a new residential property was built on it.
