Historic Sites of Manitoba: East Beaches Heritage Wing Museum (Grand Marais, RM of St. Clements)

The East Beaches Heritage Wing Museum (EBHW), located in the Grand Marais Community Central building at Grand Marais in the Rural Municipality of St. Clements, opened in 2015. Located on the traditional lands of the Anishinaabe, Cree, and Metis, the museum is managed by the EBHW Museum Committee, a group who want to share their knowledge of local history.

EBHW is an award-winning, interactive museum that tells stories of the East Beaches, from Stony Point to Victoria Beach. Watch videos of locals describing how they put food on the table back in the day. Run the model train around the diorama of Grand Beach when it was a railway resort. Check out what is playing at Harry’s Hideout, once operated by local resident Harry Blake-Knox, that offered evening movies twice a day in the summer and dances on Saturday nights.

Scroll through the museum’s digital collection of old photos to see if you know anyone. There is a collection of old-time toys for the little ones to play with as you explore. Show the kids how old payphones worked while listening to messages from locals. One of the newest exhibits is likely the last remaining piece of the Grand Beach carousel, called Blondie.

It is a small museum but you will have to visit often to see it all. Contact the museum by email if you have any questions: EBHWmuseum@gmail.com.
